For the last 25 years I have concentrated on using a large format film camera producing large prints of very high detail. The big camera lends itself well to recording a strong sense of ‘place’ and as a result the images need to have a strong sense of authenticity. on the whole the prints look like the place did at the time. Its as if you were there. literal you might say.
So what happens when you change all this and take away that large format precision? What happens when you use a small camera, with black and white, handheld and stuffed in the pocket, wet weather and cold, pictures in the dark, wide angle lenses and less worry about focus? What happens when you mix all that with some simple lines of drawn horizon with one sweep of ink on a brush, or 3 lines on a sheet of paper; one for the sky, one for the horizon and one for the creek?
To many who know and love this extraordinary landscape I hope that these imprecise pictures might conjure up the place perhaps even more than the big pictures. I have never known a landscape to be as indefinable and dynamic as here in North Norfolk, and I hope some of these pictures might reflect some of the delight and magic that you have felt here.
